How Far in Advance Should You Book a Luxury Safari in South Africa?

One of the most common questions we get at Savanna Stalkers is: how far in advance should I book? The honest answer depends on when you want to travel, where you want to stay, and how flexible you are. Here's everything you need to know.

The short answer: earlier than you think

For a luxury safari at a top private lodge in South Africa, we recommend booking at least 9 to 12 months in advance. The finest lodges — particularly in Sabi Sands and the Greater Kruger private reserves — have limited capacity by design. That exclusivity is part of what makes them extraordinary, but it also means they fill up fast, especially for peak season travel.

Peak season: book 12 months ahead

The dry season — June through September — is peak safari season in South Africa. Wildlife viewing is at its best, the weather is perfect, and every serious safari traveller knows it. The top lodges can be fully booked 12 months or more in advance during these months. If you have your heart set on a specific property during peak season, don't wait. The earlier you confirm, the better your choice of dates, suites, and experiences.

Shoulder season: 6 to 9 months ahead

April, May, and October offer exceptional safari experiences with slightly more availability. Booking 6 to 9 months ahead gives you good options at the best lodges. October in particular — known among rangers as the most exciting month in the bush — books up faster than many people expect. Don't be caught out.

Green season: 3 to 6 months ahead

November through March is the green season — lush, dramatic, and far quieter. Availability is better and rates are generally lower. Booking 3 to 6 months ahead is usually sufficient, though earlier is always better if you have specific lodges or dates in mind. The green season is genuinely magical and often underrated by first-time safari travellers.

What about last minute bookings?

Occasionally, cancellations open up availability at short notice — and at Savanna Stalkers, we know about these opportunities before they're publicly listed. If you're flexible on dates and destinations, a last-minute luxury safari is sometimes possible. Get in touch with our team and tell us your situation — we'll do everything we can to make it happen.
